No, not the leafy bush thing. I've found out today that a shrub is also a type of fruit syrup, made with fruit, sugar and vinegar. The name comes from the Arabic, Sharbah, meaning drink. This is an ancient method for preserving fruit. Or the juice at least.

They can be added to water or alcoholic drinks, and have become popular in cocktails, apparently. They are both sweet and tangy, or sweet and sour, perhaps.

They can be made by boiling fruit and adding sugar and vinegar, or they can be made by a cold steeping method.

I really fancy having a go at these. Could be great to add to gin and other things, but could they also be added to beer before bottling/kegging? Or would the vinegar element not work?

I like the look of that too, Jeff. Not sure I could drink the whole pint though.   [rofl]

Here's a cocktail that is made from IPA, white rum, pineapple shrub and something called orgeat...

"Orgeat syrup is a sweet syrup made from almonds, sugar, and rose water or orange flower water. It was, however, originally made with a barley-almond blend."
