I planted a first gold rhizome back at the end of last year. There had been no sign of it and I'd given up hope, figuring it had dried out too much before planting.

Anyway, mowing the lawn today I spotted this in the place where I planted it...looks hoppy to me, what do you lot reckon?

I'll be well pleased if it is, though hold no hope of getting any hops off it this year.

looks like hops to me G

don't think you get much the first year I think it takes a year to build up the energy in the roots for next year's crop
I like my water with barley and hops

I nearly put a hoe thought it too. Glad it's surfaced.

It's definitely a hop. It's about 6 inches high now, a week later.

I think you should do a photo update as this starts to grow, it will be interesting to see how fast it does grow and to see what sort of crop if any you get from it.[thumb]

I planted three First Gold hops last year and got about a 100gms of dried hops in teh first season from two of them. One was a bit sickly looking and didn't grow much, but the others in a different location did really well. This year one of the best last year had a REALLY late start. It was planted in some grass up against a washing line post and I am wondering if it sent its early main shoots up a bit too far from the post this spring and got the growing tips mowed off. My mistake probably. They are really growing well now, especially the one growing up at the front of my dad's old house. Pity is, I'm going to sell that house in a  few weeks. I might just dig up some of the root and plant it elsewhere.
I am off grid until the weekend.
