Has any one ever used a mash bag in the boil kettle, I'm thinkin this should make clean up easier, i think the mash bag should take the heat of an hour boil and hold most of the hot / cold break when its removed.

 Has any one tried it ?

I've considered this- double bagging so you remove one after mash and leave the second in to catch the hops, kettle trub etc. But I was worried the bag would melt to the element in the bottom of the urn and ruin the beer.

I'm interested to see if anyone has tried it!

I’ve never tried it but would be concerned about the bag touching the element. I suppose if it’s not touching the base and the material used can take the heat it may be ok .

I’m not sure that the mesh on the bag would be fine enough to capture the break material though. The one I used to use wouldn’t have caught much of it. I filter mine through voile material when transferring to the fv but why not give it a go and see. As long as the bag isn’t going to melt or scorch then why not.

My kits gas any way so no element to catch, i think the larger break material would be caught in a bag, ive just done a double brew day 45l of ale and 45l of bitter so the kit only got a quick rince between batches so there was a bit more material this time, so that got me thinking the boil kettle is the hardest part of my kit to clean, so I'm wondering what i can do differently to make life easier.

I haven't left the bag in for the boil but I do a mashout with the bag in and no problems. On a gas burner.

I do put a metal grill thing under the bag to keep it off the bottom of the kettle though.

Second the grille (or a false bottom) - there's an interface with gas heating where the wort touches the pan that will get far hotter than the 120 deg or so the polyester bag can handle.

Im not sure on leaving the grain in the boil tho - you're risking some serious tannin extraction at the least, and possibly weey more extraction from your roast grains than you might be expecting.  Like you, Ive been considering mashing in my boiler (which makes it TRUE BIAB - I bag mash in a seperate tun so its a hybrid for me) but I'll pull the bag and drain before the boil.  Personally, I've even dumped the bazooka in my boiler and do a full gauge drain off from the boiler to the fermenter through a sanitised sieve - some trub /hop debris gets through but I care not - there's suggestion this can even provide beneficial nutrients to the yeast....
Beer is like porn - you can buy it easily enough, but its so much more fun to make it [wink]

 i have separate mash and boil kettles so there wont be any malt in the boil kettle, im just looking for a way to speed up clean up is all, thinking a mash bag could  hold break material, this maybe isn't such a good idea if they cant hold heat, but after 12 hours brewing i want a quick clean up if i can get it, my mash tuns easy to clean i just winch the malt bag out and wipe it down then flush my rims tubes, if i can do something similar to with my boil kettle im laughin blackites.

Would depend on what the bag is made of, if have thought. Man made - bad, natural - probably ok.
I’m guessing though.
A false bottom or grill would help though.
It’s be no different to using a mash bag for hops then.

I'm not sure about this mash bag in the kettle idea. What is weighing the bag down? How does it catch trub? I think it's just a big hop bag isn't it?
