This is a beer i used to enjoy 30 year ago. When I were nobbut a lad. Years later i realised that Styrian Goldings were the aroma hops in a few of my favourite beers. This recipe is from its Flowers Brewery days. It's still brewed, apparently by Brains brewery, for AB InBev UK, and gets really poor ratings these days.

23 Litres  1036   1008   3.6%    24 IBUs

Pale 2400g
Crystal 300g
Invert Sugar 500g

Target  35g @ 90
Styrian Goldings 10g @ 90
Styrian Goldings 10g @ 15
Target 5g Dry Hop

Mash 65C




The 1955 recipe is on Ron P's blog, and is similar but uses Goldings - at 90, 60 and 30.

I saw some discussion somewhere, not sure where now, where there was a lobby to try to persuade Murphy's to supply this in home brewer quantities. I don't know if any progrees was made, but at least this gives an indication of what No.1 is.

I'm  interested in brewery recipes that include sugar, I have a feeling that this secret is a way to make a more authentic clone.

I might be wrong but my experience of these sugars is that they can be produced quite easily at home.


I must give that Flowers IPA recipe a try.
Would Holland and Barret malt extract be an acceptable substitute for 'malt extract', do you think?
I'll only be making my tiny demijohn batch btw. [maybe i'll miss out the extract it would only be about 7g in my brew]

This ale looks like it will be a pale blonde - is that why the crystal addition?

Brewing with sugar .... try using Lallemand ESB yeast, it attenuates to only 65%.  Which means you can doctor your recipe to use quite a lot of sugar. I like making low gravity beers in this way ... I call it the Mansfield Riding approach !

As sugar ferments out to 100%, I use it as a buffer of sorts, I tailor my recipes to hit an FG of around 1012 ...  if I am using a high attenuating yeast, little or no sugar, low attenuating yeast, more sugar.

I used to love this beer, also didn’t realise it was styrian (as I knew jack sh1t about beer) but loved its slightly perfumed aroma.
Similar recipe to wye valley HPa but without the wheat. Target and styrian is a good combo.

Munton's active yeast is another option, 6g packets.

The Munton's Standard Active (not the Premium Gold) is low attenuation - it doesn't consume maltotriose. Munton's recommend it for use with one can kits when you add a lot of simple sugar. 99p a pack, normally.

Okay, thanks for the info.  Munton's Gold is sold at 2.60e$ for a 6 gr packet here ... at that price I prefer to go elsewhere.  I haven't seen their standard yeast being sold.
