couple of small batches of cider with a festive theme..  i was wandering around asda and thought why not try a bit of mulled wine in a cider..  so

4ltrs of apple juice
half a bottle of mulled wine
250ml of diet ginger beer

mangrove jacks cider yeast

Sg 1.042

hoping to get all the spiced flavours from the mulled wine with a hint of ginger, the ginger may be a mistake.. but hey ho

[smile]

its cold today so popped the demijons in warm water for a bit to get them started

I don't do cider but if I did do cider I'd like the look of that! I like the idea of wandering around ASDA spotting things to lob in a DJ with some yeast. That looks like a good combo to me. I reckon there won't be much ginger from 250ml of ginger beer? But I've never done this sort of thing.

Having said your others ciders didn't appeal I have to agree with phil that this one makes strange sense!

I was thinking about a mulled cider a little while ago whilst wandering around the supermarket - at this time of year, Ribena make a mulled blackcurrant cordial which should do the job quite nicely [smile]

Beer is like porn - you can buy it easily enough, but its so much more fun to make it [wink]

it seemed to make sense to me, the thought was that the mulled wine maybe a more natural flavouring to add without any additives and i like a drop so i thought why not, i was in two minds if i should add the ginger as the sweeteners do give off some odd flavours at times.. so i just used a small amount as i find ginger beer too be quite strong anyway, i probably should of done one with and one without.. but again its just for fun really not really fussed if it goes down the sink

the thought did cross my mind, another easy way to get the flavour

yea i dont see why not.. you could use anything as its only like making country wines  and is probably the way to go to be honest, the only thing i did not know was how much sugar the mulled wine would contain and if it would ferment out to dry..   then the advantage of having a small amount of ginger beer would be too add a little sweetness, but you have to be carefull as i find that the sweetners in pop and dilute juice can give strange after tastes and smells.

Ginger root works really well in a cider [smile] back in my experimental days I made a root ginger and birdseye chilli Turbo cider - it was rather hot.... but actually rather nice [rofl]
