i pretty much just use the book as a guide to a recipe i fancy and tweek it a bit. i use brewers friend to do a recipe and adjust to strength and ibu that i want. usually start with 25 litres and i do sparge with up to 5 litres . (some sparge, some dont) but there is wort/sugars left in if you dont sparge a little and i hate waste .you can also brew bigger batches if you like as it is a 40litre pot. ive done brews over 30 litres with my 20l. bm
tell the malt miller when your ordering that you are using a BM and he will do the appropriate crush.
here is a link to a forum. you dont have to join but these fellas are a wealth of knowledge and theres recipies on there too.

total water required + brew length + boil off + hops absorption ( 12 % of hop weight ) + grain absorption ( 20 % of grain weight ) + tun dead space.

Mash in with 2.5 - 3.5 water to grain mixture, these days I do a full volume mash.
